Why I chose to walkout of my classroom April 2 and beyond

I am a 23 year old teacher in Oklahoma, yes I chose to be a teacher in today's world.
I chose to be a teacher because I wanted to make a difference.
I chose to be a teacher because I am passionate about the subject I teach.
I chose to be a teacher because I LOVE the students.
I chose to walkout of my classroom because enough is enough.

Lately I've heard a lot of personal attacks on me and my fellow teachers from people who do not know me or them.
I've heard things like "you get a 2 month paid vacation, why are you complaining" from a close family friend.
Let me tell you that I only get paid for the CONTRACTED days I work. I do not get paid for the summers. Don't get me wrong, I DO work in the summers. I go to students events, lesson plan and spend my OWN money getting my classroom ready, but I don't get paid for that.

However, I chose to be teacher. Therefore you are right, I knew what I was getting into. Does it make it right, no. That isn't the point I'm making though.
The point is that I teach 37 high school students in a classroom built to hold a max of 25 students.
The point is I spend my own money buying markers, scissors, tape, pencils, staples, etc.
The point is that I have 28 textbooks for 37 students to use.
The point is I work in an AMAZING school district so I can only imagine what others conditions are like!

If you know me, you know I am quiet, conservative, not really the protest type (whatever that is). I am a rule follower and not the type to cause a scene. Really, going to a packed Capitol is WAY out of my comfort zone.
However, I have been pushed to the point to say something and not be shut up about it.
I have been personally attacked and that is not okay so now it's my turn to talk. My voice is going to be heard.
Today I am standing up for your children even when you may not have the courage to.
I will be at the capitol again tomorrow to fight for what I know needs to be done.
I am proud to stand with some of my best friends as we fight for a common cause.
Today, April 2, 2018, I chose to walk out of my over crowded classroom that I adore to fight for the students that sit in it each day.

I am not fighting for myself (even though teachers deserve too) I am fighting for my babies, the students I have grown to love so deeply.
I encourage you to stand with your teachers and show your support.
We need it now more than ever!

If you do want to see some awesome stuff, here are some pictures from our first day at the capitol
